INDIANAPOLIS GUIDE

Frozen pipes in Indianapolis

Central Indiana freezes are repetitive. The houses that do best already know their shutoffs and vulnerable walls.

Confirm freeze vs shutoff

If one exterior-wall faucet is dead and others work, suspect freeze. If the whole house is dry, check the main valve and the meter pit before assuming ice.

Thaw safely

Open the faucet, warm the room, use a hair dryer on visible pipe. No torches. No leave-the-space-heater-and-go-to-work plans.

When water returns

Watch for new drips for the rest of the day. A pipe can split and only leak once ice clears.

Before the next forecast

Disconnect hoses, cover bibs, open vanity doors on exterior walls, and keep heat on in rarely used rooms. Follow your utility’s freeze guidance when they issue it.
